Excavators can be found on thousands of construction sites around the world, due in no small part to their power and versatility. Of course, while excavators can do a lot to make life easier, they can also cause major harm if used carelessly or improperly. That’s why the experts at Crownstone Equipment have created this excavator safety guide.

Before Operation

Every work day should start with a basic safety inspection of your excavator. Even something as seemingly small as cleaning and adjusting your mirrors can help reduce your chances of having an accident. It’s also important to brief the operator on any underground lines or structures that they’ll need to avoid while doing their job. If you’re having trouble locating these things, call the local utility company so that they can mark the site. Finally, make sure the operator knows about and follows basic safety procedures, like wearing a seatbelt.

During Operation

Speaking of basic safety procedures, there are several more that the excavator’s operator should be following. This includes not allowing anyone to ride in the excavator’s bucket or cab. When possible, the operator should also stick to flat ground. When encountering rough terrain or high traffic, they should slow down until the hazard is no longer an issue. Finally, keep the excavator’s bucket low when transporting materials or descending slopes. Never attempt to dig under the excavator.

After Operation

When it’s time to park the excavator, always do so on level ground with the bucket lowered. If you’re parking the excavator for the night, turn off the auto-idle switch and run the engine at half throttle for a few minutes. This will allow the turbocharger to cool down. Then, set the ROM to low idle and shut off the engine via the key switch. Don’t forget to lock up the cab!
